OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Media
The Brief
A group
of American investors has approached your media consultancy firm expressing an
interest in investing in a money making mainstream film for the American
market. They want you to:
·
Investigate a
successful American film studio.
·
Study one of the
studio’s most successful films in detail.
·
Investigate the rating
system and determine how and why the product received its rating.
·
Present to them your
findings.
To meet
the demands of the brief you will need to:
·
Investigate a large mainstream studio. Perhaps Warner
Brothers or another large American studio. Ownership? Operating model?
Products? Market position? Competitors?
·
Analyse one product:
purpose, genre, form, style, content, meaning, production process.
·
Analyse Target
Audience: gender, age, lifestyle, spending power.
·
Investigate and
analyse distribution channels and advertising.
· Analyse impact on audience, issues regarding representation, relevant legal and/or ethical issues, and role of reg bodies.

Audience Profile:
She’s the Man
Who is the target audience for
the film?
The target audience for the film is teenagers of both genders but also for parents as well. I think they did this on purpose because they will make more money if they have a bigger target audience. The trailer is ambiguous; it shows stuff appealing for both genders, its shows football (soccer) for the males but it also shows the girly stuff such as the debutant ball that Viola attends for the females. I think that Bynes was casted for this part because she had her own show and would have had a lot of fans the same age as the target audience for the film which meant that it already meant that the film would have had people wanting to see it before its release.

Everyone enjoyed watching movies even though the films may have plot holes or controversial social/cultural issues. Two people said that they think plot holes ruin a movie but the rest said that plot holes don't ruin a movie.
Only one person said that they don't notice plot holes when watching movies but everyone else said that they do notice them.
Some examples of the biggest plot hole that people noticed were: Star Wars and how did Yoda manage to fix his ship. Dark Knight Rises and that all the police were underground when only a couple of cars could have been sent. Titanic and that two people could have easily laid on the plank of wood but Jack didn't climb on.
Most people said that the main plot hole in She's the Man was: She would have been found out on multiple occasions, especially because she was on the boys football team.
One person said that the social/cultural issue was that the film showed that women aren't good enough to play football with men even though she is better than some of the people playing.
Most people said that films are not responsible for children committing crimes but some can be influenced but it is a minority.
I think that the film has been rated a PG-13 because some of the characters are topless in the film and that were some public displays of affection so I think that the rating is fair.
